The Queen has visited the Duke of Edinburgh in hospital as he recovers from a bladder infection that forced him to miss the end of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

She arrived at the private King Edward VII Hospital in central London after Buckingham Palace had said the Duke’s condition had “improved considerably”.

Prince Andrew arrived to see his father a few minutes after the Queen.

The Queen stayed for about 40 minutes.

As she left, the monarch smiled broadly at the waiting media before getting into her car.

Buckingham Palace said Prince Philip was still being given antibiotics to combat his infection.

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s condition has improved considerably since coming into hospital on Monday,” the spokesperson said.

“He is likely to remain in hospital over the next few days. He is in good spirits.”

Earlier, the Duke’s youngest son Prince Edward said his father was “getting better”, after he visited him.

Prince Philip, 90, was taken to London’s King Edward VII Hospital from Windsor Castle on Monday as a precautionary measure.

The illness forced him to miss several Jubilee events, including the concert outside Buckingham Palace and the service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Asked if the Duke had been keeping up with the Jubilee celebrations, Prince Edward said: “He’s been watching it on TV.”

The Duke had been due to attend the events at the Queen’s side. The Queen instead travelled to St Paul’s with one of her ladies-in-waiting, Diana Marion, the Lady Farnham, and sat next to the Prince of Wales during the service.

During the open-top carriage ride back to Buckingham Palace, she was accompanied by Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

The Prince of Wales paid tribute to his father on Monday night as he addressed the crowds gathered for the Diamond Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace.

During Sunday’s river pageant, the Duke spent several hours on the Thames and clearly enjoyed seeing the flotilla despite torrential rain.
