A 71-year-old woman and her six-year-old grandson have been found dead in a pond.
The discoveries followed a search on land and by RAF helicopter at Holywell village, near Castle Bytham, in Lincolnshire.
The alarm was raised by the boy’s mother after he went to stay with her mother on Wednesday night and did not return home the following day.
Police went to the grandmother’s address in Castle Bytham after the call at 9.20pm on Thursday.
The house was empty, triggering a search for the missing pair and the elderly woman’s car.
The woman and her grandson drove to a nearby duck pond
At about 10.45pm officers found the car close to a duck pond in a nearby village.
Soon afterwards the grandmother’s body was recovered from the pond.
Despite efforts to resuscitate her she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The search continued into the night for the boy and just before 4am Lincolnshire Police underwater search unit officers recovered his body.
A police spokesman said: “The circumstances surrounding the deaths are being investigated and post-mortems will be carried out in due course.”
Formal identification is not expected to take place until Monday.
