Hernandez went down after appearing to twist his ankle just seven minutes into Manchester United‘s1-0 win against Aston Villa and Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that the Mexico striker is now a major doubt for the busy December programme.
The issue is compounded by the current injuries to Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen, although Berbatov could potentially return to face Basle in the Champions League on Wednesday.
“I think it is torn ligaments,” said Ferguson. “He could be out for three to four weeks. We’re having a torrid time with injuries at the moment. Danny Welbeck came back and he gives us an option for Wednesday.
“He’s not had a lot of football recently so it’s something I’ll have to consider. Valencia also did very well when he came on so we’ve got some options up front and maybe Berbatov’s fit also.”
Aston Villa also lost Shay Given and Jermaine Jenas to injury. Given has suffered a suspected hamstring tear that could keep him out for a month while Jenas will have a scan on his achilles on Monday.
